Yugoslavia was never a united country, except by force and the wartime credentials of Tito. I remember going to Croatia as a teenager in the mid-80s, and being told by an official from the tourist office that I was not in 1 country, but 5.

And yes, the EU were complicit in the break up of the former Yugoslavia and subsequent mayhem, a situation that NATO not the EU had to resolve

There was if I recall correctly a tricky situation with Russian troops at an airport, when fortunately the troops confronting them were Brits lead by a guy on the ground who ignored broader instruction and held his line, Paras?

I remember hearing on a radio documentary that there was nearly another slaughter along the lines of Srebrenica. Fortunately it was the Staffords not some Dutch or Danish lot looking after the Bosnians and the Serbs were very unpleasantly surprised to find some professional soldiers firing at them. After a quite along exchange of fire the Serbs realised the Staffords were going nowhere and killing the Bosnians would also mean a lot of dead Serbs so they cleared off.
